Cathedral Museum - "Heavenly envoys. Angels"

[Nov. 29, 2008 - Jan. 6, 2009] As intended by the original meaning of the word, angels are envoys announcing the birth of ChristDivine messengers Angels are purely spiritual, supernatural beings created by God. They appear in the Story of Christmas as God's messengers, sent to announce the birth of Christ. Angels have a mighty stature in Romanesque art and assume human features in Gothic art. Angels appear in large numbers during the Baroque Age, filling paintings and rooms to express the omnipresence of God's working. This year's Christmas exhibition will focus on the portrayal of angels. Angels through the ages Angels have a personality but no body. According to Thomas Aquinas their intellect and will are closer to God than man's. The angels in the Story of Christmas are not "Heaven's civil servants […] on field duty“ (Giorgio Agamben), but – as originally intended by the Greek term "angelos“, "envoys“ announcing the birth of Christ.
