Museum Residenzgalerie Salzburg

[Nov. 15, 2008 - Feb. 8, 2008] The exhibition shows a selection of large-scale 17th-century paintings intended for Guidobald Thun's gallery.Prince-Archbishop Guidobald von Thun 1616 - 1668 Prince-Archbishop Guidobald von Thun shaped the baroque townscape of Salzburg. His 14-year rule (1654-1668) saw substantial elements added to the Residenz, as well as the building of the winter riding-school (now the Karl Böhm Saal in the Festival Hall), the Residenz fountain and the Pegasus fountain (now in the Mirabell garden). The main building projects surrounding Guidobald's Residenz included the Cathedral arcades and façade, the design of the south façade in the Cathedral Square, and the construction of the gallery for his collection of paintings on the first floor of this wing (today the "Long Gallery" of St. Peter's). Paintings from the Salzburg ArchbishopricThe exhibition shows a selection of large-scale 17th-century paintings intended for Guidobald Thun's gallery. Since he died suddenly before it was completed, the Archbishop himself never saw the works hanging, so it was his successor, Max Gandolph Kuenburg (1668 - 1687) who had the benefit of it.
